Auto-Voyage 1 (Mississauga-Kitchener-Kincardine)

July 23rd 2013: (Mississauga-Kitchener)

Our first day in Canada after two years' break and our first with Wifi-devices. Months ago, I purchased an older iPhone 3GS from ebay, so I would step up with technology. It was proven that this device becomes very useful, because you can see where you are going to and how fast you are going. It helped us throw some troubling situations, though the map was not downloaded properly. Unfortunately, I missed the first few hours into the holiday to record the GPS tracks. For whom may concern, my track recorder is the app "MyTracks". But Bob, the iphone has a problem: Fast battery drainage. Solution: cars and trains with power outlets.

Our first act in North America is to screw up the directions (like always). So, instead of going to the Halton County Radial Rail Museum, we landed in Brampton. Funny, I recognized the region, even after two years of absence. I said: "We will be in Brampton in short time. I know that street." We turned around and after some confusing turns, we were at the museum. I can recommend that museum, it has not only a hall, where older trains are standing, it has also a track, where people can go two a turn around and an "ice cream stand". There is a sad reminder at the end of the track, which had railroad tracks to Toronto. Older men (who volunteer) will drive these trolleys and are kindly to answer all questions asked. After two trips with these trolleys, we left the museum and drove to Guelph for lunch. The next destination was Fergus and later Elora. Elora Gorge had something like a obstacle course over the river (2:54 in the video). I will surely come back to explore more. Both are towns with very powerful rapids of the "Grand River". I can also recommend a visit to the Westmore Covered Bridge and then going to Kitchener. Kitchener, was know as Berlin until WW1, Canadians renamed the city in honour to General Kitchener. But it celebrates the Oktoberfest, with it's German speaking lawyers (one look into the phonebook, at least three German speaking lawyers are serving that city.) Google says for the driving time 3 hours. We spent double that time. But one request: Google screws up navigation, do not use any map app for navigation.

This is the circa travel track.

July 24th 2013:
Our second day in Canada began with the usual question: Where are we going now? Destination was Kincardine, Ontario in the nice Bruce County at the Lake Huron.

One look on the map, we discovered some German sounding names. Luxemburg, New Hamburg, Baden. We followed the Highway 8 to New Hamburg, in order to discover a park with a huge waterwheel. I think it's worth to explore, as it costs no money at all. Interesting is also the line of stones. So you could stand in the middle of the rapids and no foot will become wet.

Enough for exploring there, we headed to Stratford, Stratford is near London, but we followed the 8 further. Now Ontario becomes very rural. The only thing I remember, that we landed in a huge construction zone called "Goderich". They were even moving their union station building. I can recommend to visit the town hall and you will be amazed by the kind how the town hall is located: In a huge roundabout. Our next station was Point Farms Prov Park. A relatively small park with a light house under renovation.

We followed then the 21 to Kincardine, along with wind mill farms and one burnt out windmill.. On TV, we saw a documentary about how Kincardine deals with the windmills.

Back to Kincardine. Kincardine is a nice town at the lake Huron. We did a walk at the park down the beach at the afternoon, where our action cams were tested.

I'm surprised to discover "Breslau" near London and Zurich...  And Brussels...

Well ok, that's it...

Here is a video about the experience in Canada. Dispite we have recorded all the traces in Canada, no release will be done. GPS-files will be used to give the exact location of places in the video...
